As Thriller- Helena

                                          Media Studies

The music at the beginning of the video made us know, that it is going to be Thriller, not comedy or action. I really liked the car, which was well selected for the tall and slim lady named Helena. I didn’t like how she got out from the car. When she put her first foot out, it kind of slipped on the door. She didn’t go out from the car so smoothly, it showed unprofessionalism of the video makers who didn’t see this moment. The main character is quit defiantly, because of her fashion cloths. It was obviously morning, the clock showed 11:15, as I think it would be better if she came back home in the evening or night, it would be more scary. They used zoom shoot on her palm when she was opening the fridge to show the ring, which meant that she is married. The drawing on the wall showed that she has children, but going from light area to dark( from the fridge to the outside door) showed her dark thoughts about her family. I didnt like how she was dailing the numbers on the phone, first it was not so fast and after it began to get faster, which seemed quit unrealistic, it seemed like it was the sound from background. When she finished talking on the phone, the operator began to video from the back of the house, showing that someone is monitoring, watching her. It was quit strange that she came into the bathroom with her high heels, i didnt get this moment why she came with her shoes on into the bathroom and why there was a zoom shoot on how she is taking her shoes off. The moment when they showed us the picture with her husband was the last mention of her family. The shadow that went throught the picture and the door slam showed  that someone is in the house, who shoudnt be. Also the sudden call from her husband who told that he is not still at home made this scene more scary. I liked the moment at the begining when the door was open and the moment at the end when the door was open too, it meant that it werent the children that didnt close the door, maybe there was someone already  in the house from the begining before she came at first. Also the music effect changed into more tentional  showing that someone is in the house and something horrible is going to happen.

About Myself

Hey, my name is Rafael Karapetyan, I am 17 years old, nearly 18. I live in Russia, Moscow but my nationality is Armenian. I had quit a bad background. Its my fourth year in England. My first two years in England were in York, Queen Ethelburgas. The school was really good in terms of houses, rooms, territory. But the main problem was, that no one studied there. Students didnt care about their education, teachers were not so seriuos about teaching us, so i got into that influence of not studying and i can say that i lost two years. I failed all my subjects. When i came to Hurtwood i promised to myself that i will do my best to achieve better grades and put effort into studying. And i did it. Its my second year in Hurtwood House school, and I really enjoy it. I finished my GCSE here and it went quit well.

The subjects I am doing now are Sociology, Media Studies, Maths and Economics. I have choosen each of them by my desicion, but not under anyones influence or parents wants. The reason why i am doing Media Studies is simple, i wanted some creativity. I have choosen two academically strong subjects and Sociology which is quit difficult too, so also having Media Studies will provide enjoyment.

I like doing sports. I used to do boxing for 2 years, but now i stopped. Other sports i like are swimming, football and others. I also enjoy other active sports like pool, paintball, bowling, table-football.
I really like watching movies, but only in cinemas, not for example on laptops. One of my favourite movies is Onces Upon a Time in America with Robert De Niro.

The analysis of picture " The Sinning"

If anyone saw this poster i guess everyone would think that it represents a thriller movie. The red title of the movie signifies that there is going to be blood, death and other horrible things. The picture shown gives a good explanation of what the film is about you see a psycho man on the left with an axe stuck in the door with a disturbing smile and you see the opposite on the right a scared woman with her mouth open screaming holding a small kitchen knife in front of her to protect herself.
As i think the first think that shows us that it is thriller is the facial expression of both characters of the poster. We can see the mad face of the person standing of the left, The mad look with open mouth showing his teeth shows that he was chasing her and now he drove her into a corner. His eyes look like they are looking at her but the door is in the way and she is staring at the axe. From just the mans face the audience can tell he is insane from his eyes and mouth There is a big contrast between their weapons, he has a huge axe and she is holding a kitchen knife, this shows his advantage over her. We can see her horrified face with open mouth which shows that she is frightened to death.

The camera angle used is side on so you can see both rooms divided by the door this is effective as you can see both their reactions in one shot.  You get a close up of the man on the left and can see the woman on right in the background this shows the man is more dominant over the woman and also shows that the woman is weak and is hiding away from the madman. The poster shows that the man is the main focus of the film as it makes him out to be the killer and shows a close-up of his face.

Analysis of a Poster "The Conversation"

I have chosen this poster, because i find it more interesting than others. There are a lot of descriptions that can be made just by looking at this poster.
The red colour on which lies the white title signifies that there is going to be murders, blood and other crime events. The movie story is going to take place probably in New-York. Just by looking at the town, which is black and pale we understand that something mysterious is happening. The black town signifies darkness and danger. We can see a couple standing on the red colour, which means that probably they are the victims of a huge crime that is going to happen. Also they are quit close to each other which means that there is romance going on between them. There are a lot of ideas about the person above the couple. He might be an assassin that is chasing the victims, he might be the killer with a sniper. But all this is wrong, first of all because the zoom which is shown in the poster is not a sniper zoom, it is a camera zoom. Sniper zoom has four lines coming from each side of north, south, east, and west to one dot. The second reason why he is not the killer, assassin because his face is looking down and it is quit sad.
As i think poster is quit effective, it hides a lot of questions about itself which makes it more interesting so, more and more people would like to see the movie.

Intro to cameras lesson

During the lesson on Tuesday we learned a lot of new ways of controling and using the camera. As an example i have learned some totally new words that I havent even heard.

One of the first things we have learned is using tripod. Tripod is a general term for a stand or support
with three legs. It is often used to support a camera, it is also used  to stabilize and elevate a camera, a flash unit, or other photographic equipment. The other important thing that we have learnt is the White Balance.

White balance is a process when you are removing unrealistic colour cast, so objects which appear white in the person are rendered also white in the photo. Also “colour temperature” of a light must be taken into account. We can easily judge what is white under different light sources, but digital cameras are having huge difficulties with auto white balance, and can create blue, orange colour casts. Learning white balance would cause us less problems with doing mistakes on colour casts.

We have also learned exposure and framing. Exposure is the amount of light allowed to fall on each area. Exposure is measured in lux seconds, which can be computed from exposure value.
Framing is a way of using natural surroundings to add more meaning to a picture. Anything can be included, like window, door, trees or grass, ect. It is necessary not to focus on what’s framing the subject; it is the main subject that must be focused

One of the most important rules is “The rule of Thirds”. It means that the frame can be divided into three horizontal sections and also vertical sections.  So when the both sections intercept, they make an ideal location for more important parts of the picture.  It is also useful if there is more than one important subject.  Dividing can also be helpful in setting a picture, because it can help to determine how much horizon is wanted.Other rule which is also important is the “Rule of 180 degree”. The 180 degree rule based on a line between two points. If you are to If this rule is not followed, all the shots will be on one side of the line. One of the main reasons to follow the rule, is the keep audience oriented

In a dialogue scene between two characters, Justin (orange shirt, frame left in the diagram) and Drew (blue shirt, frame right), the camera may be placed anywhere on the green 180° arc and the spatial relationship between the two characters will be consistent from shot to shot, even when one of the characters is not on screen. Shifting to the other side of the characters on a cut, so that Drew is now on the left side and Justin is on the right, may disorient the audience.

We divided ourself into groups and started to film short sequences. We filmed three types of shoots: Wide shoot, medium close up and close up. We had an officer token on our table. We were filming the three types of shoots. Anna, one of our people in the group had to walk towards the table, grab the token and than put it back. We did it three times, so we would have all three types of shoot. The second task i had to go forward the computer, type something on the keyboard and come back. We filmed it again three times but using also different types of shoot, like having the camera angle looking from the back, or the shoulder of the actor.

All in all as i think it is quit hard at the beggining when you just start to learn it, but as the time passes on you start to understand everything. It is also quit interesting to people who are just started learning all about it.
