Audition-analysis
I got my first feling that this film has a thriller genre was when I saw the woman standing still with a white coloured dress (where white colour signifies innocence) and the man coming towards her dressed in all black(where black signifies negative feelings and bad emotions). The next scene was her lying in the bed and slowly dragging the white blanket upwards, this made me know that this movie is going to be based on raping and men behaving physically horrible to the woman. The scene where she was hiding behind the tree proved my expectations where she was being physically abused and hiding from her porter. After I saw the spiky sticks in the box and her sitting on the floor and smiling it gave a meaning to me of her starting to take revenge. First she remembered her previous life and how she was abussed and then we saw images of her killing and physically taking revenge causing them pain. After all these scenes it was clear that the genre of the film is thriller. The red colour splashing at white background at the end signified that there is going to be blood, deaths and turtures...

The usual suspect
On this poster we can see five men, where each one are standing in different positions which connotates their characteristics. Each one of them behaves differently in the actual movie.
I am going to start with describing the guy in the middle, because he seems to be the main one from all five of them. This is shown to us by him standing in the middle and being the tallest. His hand gesture is kind of showing that he is a king or prince. Compared to others,he is the tallest as i said, he doesn't lean on anyone which shows that he is self-confident and also his look which is sharp compared to others.
The guy on the left of him gives us a feeling of him being the most crucial and brutal. His hands are partly in pocket, he is standing still and his lags have most of the space which shows that he is independent and self confident. They way he is dressed also shows that he is different from others. He reminds me of brutal Caucasian people who are quit rude and who are always wearing black, like they have mourning every day
The first guy from the left leaves us a feeling of being the most funny. This is because he is the shortest from all of them and because he is kind of covered by the shoulder of the guy on the right of him. But sometimes people with such characteristic(being short and funny) are being the most crazy ones.
The person standing first from the right looks least confident. This is shown by him slightly leaning on the guy who is on the right of him, slouching and holding his hand with the other one. The fact that he is leaning on the guy on the right of him makes us think that he is quit weak (both morally and physically), that he is reliant upon others(not like the guy described in the third paragraph) and also him being the least-confident and least independent.
The second guy from the right looks the strangest. First of all this is shown by him wearing totally different cloths( he is wearing suit which shows that he is the most civilised and cleaver from all of them) and also that he is the only one holding his jacket. This all shows that possibly he has family, he has its own life and he doesn't want to get involved into what thees guys are going to get.

Props and their description
Basically our prisoner will be wearing white shirt, black trousers and black shoes. All his cloths will be clean, there is not going any blood, dust or any kind of dirtiness on his cloths. I want him to look cool, like James Bond.
Prisoner's cloths
The primary agent's cloths and his gun.
The other two guarder's cloths.
I dont want the guards to look too simple and dumb. So i will try to find such cloths which would look partly cool and also appropriate for a Russian special force soldiers
I want the Lady who is going to save the prisoner look quit cool and equipped. So i chose for her tight cloths which look both cool and sexy.
The Laddie's cloths and her sniper
Prisoner's cloths
That's how I want our prisoner to look, but without the black tie and the jacket. Also the last image's trousers will be black(i couldn't find any black trousers)
The Agent's cloths
There are going to be three people looking after the prisoner. But one of them is the primary agent, so I want the main guy from all three of them to be waring suit as well, and the other two guys will wear special force's cloths.I dont want the guards to look too simple and dumb. So i will try to find such cloths which would look partly cool and also appropriate for a Russian special force soldiers

Connotation and Denotation-meanings
Connotation:
• the abstract meaning or intension of a term, which forms a principle determining which objects or concepts it applies to.
Denotation:
• the object or concept to which a term refers, or the set of objects of which a predicate is true. Often contrasted with connotation .
So basically Denotation is what the audience actually see, and Connotation is what it signifies.
Connotation and denotation are not two separate things/signs. They are two aspects/
elements of a sign, and the connotative meanings of a word exist together with
the denotative meanings].
− Connotation represents the various social overtones, cultural implications, or emotional
meanings associated with a sign.
− Denotation represents the explicit or referential meaning of a sign. Denotation
refers to the literal meaning of a word, the ‘dictionary definition.’
For example, the name ‘Hollywood’ connotes such things as glitz, glamour, tinsel,
celebrity, and dreams of stardom. In the same time, the name ‘Hollywood’ denotes an
area of Los Angeles, worldwide known as the center of the American movie industry.

Idea of our thriller
We were discussing in our group the possible ideas of our thriller until Theo had a nice idea about Russian Mafia. When he gave the idea, we began to develop it, but we have also changed it.
Our location is in Russia,Siberia. We see a prisoner with a black bag on his hand and also who's hands are tied up. He is taken by three Russian agents to a quit place where they can finish him. He is brought to the place where the two agents put him down on his knees. One of the agents( who seems to be the main one from all three of them) stands in front of the prisoner with a cigarette in his mouth and asks for a gun( this is going to be said in Russian to make in cooler). The prisoner is behaving himself very calm, he doesn't show any fear, he is still, he is not afraid of them, it seems like he knows that the ending of this will be positive. We see the agent pointing the gun at the prisoner. There is a close up of the trigger of the gun, then we hear a diegetic sound of the shot but we don't see the agent's trigger at the time when the shot happens,we make then a shot of the back of the agents falling down. Both guards arу in a loss, then we see both of them through the sniper aim which signifies that someone else is involved in all this. Both of the guards are shot down and the mysterious sniper reveals. We see the sniper( It is a woman) walking down to the prisoner. As she gets close to him she takes out the bag, then we hear snide remark along the line " Why did it take you so long". Then we see them walking along the forest. The prisoners hands are still tied up but then we see him freeing himself out which lets us know that he could free himself whenever he wanted.
Film Editing Glossary
Cut
A visual
transition created in editing in which one shot is replaced on screen by
another.
Continuity
editing
Editing that creates action that flows smoothly across shots and scenes
without jarring visual inconsistencies. Establishes a sense of story for the
viewer.
Cross cutting
Cutting back
and forth between two or more lines of action, indicating they are happening
simultaneously
Dissolve
A gradual
scene transition. The editor overlaps the end of one shot with the beginning of
the next one
Editing
The work of
selecting and joining together shots to create a finished
film
Errors of
continuity
Disruptions
in the flow of a scene such as a failure to match action or the placement of
props across shots
Establishing
shot
A shot,
normally taken from a great distance or from a “bird’s eye view”, that
establishes where the action is about to occur
Eyeline match
The matching
of eyelines between two or more characters. For example if Rafael looks to the right in
shot A, Marselo will look to the left in shot B. This establishes a
relationship of proximity and continuity
Fade
A visual
transition between shots or scenes that appears on screen as a brief interval
with no pictures. The editor fades one shot to black and then fades in the
next. Often used to indicate a change in time and place
Final cut
The finished edit
of a film, approved by the director and the producer. This is what the audience
sees
Iris
Visible on
screen as a circle closing down or opening up a shot. Seldom used in
contemporary film, but common during the silent era of Hollywood films
Jump cut
A cut that
creates a lack of continuity by leaving out parts of the action
Matched cut
A cut joining
two shots whose compositional elements match, helping to establish strong
continuity of action
Montage
Scenes whose
emotional impact and visual design are achieved through the editing together of
many brief shots.
Rough cut
The editor’s
first pass at assembling the shots into a film, before tightening and polishing
occurs
Sequence shot
A long take
that extends for an entire scene or sequence. It is composed of only one shot
with no editing
Shot reverse
shot cutting
Usually used
for conversations scenes, this technique alternates between over-the-shoulder
shots showing each character speaking
Shot sizes. Meaning and motivation.
Big close-up (BCU)
Head or part of head.
Used to show emotions and detail. Reserved for passion or conflict.
Mid Shot (MS)
Provides information on the body language and cloths of the character
Wide Shit (WS)
Master
or establishing shot. It is usually used at the beginning of a scene and at the
end. Helps to shot the physical geography of the space up from atmosphere.
Point of View (Pov)
Provides perspectives from a particular character’s point of view. The
director manipulates whose eyes the audience experiences the story from.
Close-up or close shot (CU)
Head and shoulders .Reveal characters personality. Intimate and
powerful. Useful for dramatic or
revealing moments of truth/crisis. Close shots work to increase audience
identification with a character.
Medium-long shot (MLS)
Including the knees. Provides more physical information than the mid
shot, but less close up detail.
Over the shoulder (0/S)
Helps to create dynamic between the character and what they are seeing.
Can also be used to suggest someone is being followed or watched by an unseen
presence
High angle
Camera points down from above eyeline, looking down on someone. Can
indicate low status or vulnerability
Medium close-up
Head and shoulders to top pocket. Useful all-round shot
Long shot (LS)
Full figure. Often used to distance the audience from events or suggests
isolation or loneliness
Two shot, three shot
By framing two or more characters in the same shot, a sense of how they
relate to each other is created. The reverse of this is to keep characters in
separate frames to suggest a lack of common ground or interaction
Low angle
Camera points up from below eyeline. It shows that the person has high
status, someone powerful or intimidating
Kill Bill
Kill Bill.
The scene one starts off Bride lying in the coffin,
with an aggressive man standing over her, she looks weak and flaccid. This is
reinforced through her being buried alive in a coffin. Tied up hands, and
helpless Bride signifies that she is about to die. This is reinforced through
the setting of the graveyard which we didn’t see in the clip. Short breathing
indicates that she is scared. The western music is non-diegetic, and it
juxtaposed death. The nail banging on coffin highlights her being locked. We
can hear the diegetic sound of car which is driving away after the process of
locking Bride is finished; this signifies that she is left alone to die. This
is contrasted with her diegetic screams of helplessness. We can also hear the
synchronous, diegetic sounds of the soil being thrown on her coffin, but we
don’t actually see them throwing the soil at her coffin, we can see it from
actor’s point of view shot.
The second scene is showing her, trying her best to
get out from the coffin. There is a non-diegetic western music which increases
in terms of tension as she gets near to escape and the music also shows that
there is going to be revenge. It is the music of freedom which also signifies
that she will success. The stops her
short breaths which turn into deep, long breaths which signifies her calmness.
Also the non-diegetic sound which matches her heart beating. She is in control
about her actions. The non-diegetic sound is in the time with the screen action
increases the tempo on its nature that informs us that she is now more likely
to survive. Angelic, non-diegetic sounds signifies that she is about to reborn
and escape. – Synchronous degetic sounds of her breaking through the coffin+ the
earth as she is metaphorically reborn. We can see a change in her facial
expression which indicates a domination to escape; this is signified through
her ability to find the knife, which is the way to get freedom. Coffin in
contrast to first scene looks larger. Her state of mind is calm as opposed to
claustrophobic. The determination is symbolised through the punching of coffin,
blood coming from her hands and her facial gesture signifies that she is
strong. We see the smile and happiness on her face as she frees herself by
knife. The music gets faster as she bangs the coffin. Her hand breaking through
the coffin shows that she is near to reborn. The music suddenly finishes as she
frees herself into the freedom. The camera shots used were Close up- was used
when showing the man’s face standing above Bride near the coffin while burring
her . Point of view- was used when showing how Bride frees herself by cutting
the rope. Tracking shoot- was used in
showing how she takes her boots out and moving the camera all the way from her
legs towards her head. Wide shot- showing her full body. Panning shot- this was to follow the action/ to refocus and
stimulate new interest.

One of his
works that he did for the film Dawn of the Dead was using real human blood. A
critic Elvis Mitchell in the New York Times review of the movie said “The
opening and closing credits are so good; they're almost worth sitting through
the film for." Indeed, the word in Hollywood is that some filmmakers have
refused to work with Cooper, says Dawn of the Dead director Zach Snyder,
because he's "the guy who makes title sequences better than the
movie."His work on
the intro sequence of Seven won universal acclaim and established him as a big
player in the movie industry.
So to overall Kyle’s Cooper career, he has been designing and producing opening credit sequence for fifteen years. First at R/Greenberg Associates NY and then R/Greenberg Associates LA. Then he founded Imaginary Forces and after that he founded Prologue Films.
One of the most famous works he have done for the movie is the opening sequence for the movie Se7en. Cooper is quit happy with the work he have done with it, and he would really change anything if he had to do it again.Seven was
one of the first movie’s to use Kinetic Typography for the into title sequence.
The wizard behind the type treatment was Kyle Cooper, a pioneer in motion
graphics, who later founded Imaginary Forces in 1996 with Peter Frankfurt and
Chip Houghton.
So to overall Kyle’s Cooper career, he has been designing and producing opening credit sequence for fifteen years. First at R/Greenberg Associates NY and then R/Greenberg Associates LA. Then he founded Imaginary Forces and after that he founded Prologue Films.
