Storyboard

Storybaord image from Gone with the Wind

What is storyboard?

Once a concept or script is done for the film or music video, the following step is to make a storyboard. It enables to visualise the flow of camera shots and sets which are wanted to eventually appear on the screen. When the words of the scrip are broken into unit of actions and drawn as a storyboard it is much easier to understand whether the idea is going to work. Consequently the storyboard helps to change the sequence of the shots, movement of actors, camera directions and lightening directions/ In addition the storyboard illustrates how the narrative will flow from one shot to the next as the audience watches the music video/film.

The Storyboard shot include:

· What characters are in the frame, and how are they moving?
· What are the characters saying to each other, if anything?
· How much time has passed between the last frame of the storyboard and the current one?
· Where the "camera" is in the scene? Close or far away? Is the camera moving
As Matthew Jones. Television Script Editor of Red Productions said ‘ In a production meeting, a picture really is worth a thousand words. You can script a sequence in words as clearly as you like, and there will always be same misunderstanding. But if you use storyboards, it’s so much easier to communicate your visual driving ideas’

Why we should make storyboards?

Example of storyboard:

Creating a storyboard helps to plan the animation out shot by shot. It is also possible to make changes to the storyboard before starting animating. Instead of changing your mind later. Moreover it would be also possible to show the storyboard to other people to get feedbacks about the ideas

We have to shoot our music video on one day, therefore right now we are working on our storyboard to have some ideas about the video and to understand whether it can be implemented. As a group we have division of labour, each of us is doing the set task. As an example I am indicating the types of shot and angles which should be used and the varieties of lighting we should use. Moreover I am correcting the storyboard, by checking whether there are any mistakes.

Emily Tedrake and her career life

Emily Tedrake and her career life

Emily Tedrake works in the Polydor Records as a video commissioner situated in London. The record company she is working on is relatively successful and is in the process of developing. The company is a major record label, which is a part of Universal Music Group (Time Warner conglomerate).

                                                        Biography:
Emily started off as an art painter and then moved to photography industry which allowed her to have a free internship for Polydor as she already had the base knowledge. Work experience (with video director) is very important and valuable, however is unpaid. After the successful work experienced she signed a contract with an artist and the record label.

The creation of music video process:
The basic budget is set from £1000 to £100 000. The range of budget in between depends on the projected records sales and recouped monies i.e. James Blake. The promotional tool is the music video which is also the part of the marketing campaign and time needs to pass through in order for profit to cover the costs.

Treatment – Is basically everything which is needed for the actual video to be shot. First of all it is the specific location. Then you need to figure out how you are going to shoot the band, what the props would look like depending on the narrative. When decision is made about the narrative casting must be considered as well in order to choose the right actors, who would have the right star image and styling. Overall treatment covers most of the important parts of music video making.

Ellie Goulding Ellie Goulding’s Burn

In one of the music video which was shot for Ellie Gouding,
One of the music video where Ellie Gouding was the solo singer 70-100 extras were needed. The video was a 12 hour shoot on a military base. Consequently it is also the issue whether the record company have the budget and the availability for massive shots, as for example performing on military base needed permission from UK government. The music video had budget of £60 000

James Blake./ Overgrown./ Overgrown music video

The second music video Emily showed us was called ‘Overgrown’ (which is one of the Emily’s favourite’s videos) with James Blake singing.

The budget of the video was £30,000 and was directed by a very valuable and experienced director. It was shot in Los Angeles over two days. Most of it was done in post-production. The music video starts off with non-diegetic music showing us the beauty of forest and nature. As the video continues we see James Blake (the singer) walking around the forest and looking around. We are able to see the starry sky and get across the fascinating landscape with a star image. Then we see professional backer dancers following and then getting into the James’s body

White Lies
The third music we were showed was a remake of a band called White Lies. The band is only just developing and their first attempt for music video wasn’t really professional however the band looked perfectly fitting for developing it.

The remake was shot three weeks ago. The budget was £15 000 and the director was French. The director knew exactly what he wants. He shoots lots of different images based on theme. The video was shot in Paris, representing a young band performing in the country of pretty girls and fashion.
The original video was a low budget one with a shortage amount of fans. The main aim was to make the clip look more professional and therefore attract more audience in order for profit to be made and increase the awareness of the pop band i.e. word of mouth. Remake of White Lies Video

Neighbourhood insparation

Our main inspiration came from this group and their black&white. This band is an American rock band that was formed in August 2011. The band is made up from vocalist Jesse Rutherford, guitarists Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels, bassist Mikey Margott, and drummer Bryan Sammis. The band is only in the stage of successful development. The Neighbourhood released their first full length album, I Love You., on April 23, 2013, via Columbia Records. The band is famous for their black&white music videos, their unique artwork and design.

Their most successful music video is called ‘Sweather Weather’, hitting 6 million views.

                                                                                 Facebook:

As the firm is only just progressing they haven got much followers on Facebook, however 146k is still a number.

Nowadays band boys such as this one are quite popular and are valuable in music industry. It is mainly the girls who are incredibly attracted to such boy band. However it a competitive market where you need to advertise yourself at the highest level. It is also very important for such boys bands to have someone unique, as market is very competitive. As an example the Neighbourhood band has its own unique emblem which makes them outstand among other bands, it is also a good advertisement and a way to remember the band.

Our Insparation for black&white music video

                                                               Black and White inspiration.

When making music video became popular and available, the first ones were black&white. However as technology developed such style became to be seen as old fashioned. Recently  making black&white music video became incredibly popular. Justin Timberlake's Suit&Tie is one of the best examples of such style of video, which also gained an enormous popularity hitting 50 million views.

The inspiration for making black and white video mainly came from this clip. Such colour makes the clips look cool and original.

The other good example of black&white music video is Chris Isaak's Wicked Game. However this video was only released in 1989, but still is quit popular having 18 million views.

The second music video which influenced me was the Robby William’s song ‘Rock DJ’. I really liked the idea of again the solo singer and exactly him getting all the attention from good-looking girls. This video includes both a hot solo singer- which attracts female audience and good-looking girls attracting male audience. By having both genders in the video makes double target audience which increases the amount of viewers.
The other thing that I like is the singer and the extras (female dancers) reacting to the lyrics, because it makes the video to look even cooler.

Music video:

Robbie Williams and his music clips are a good example of a developed solo singer. It clearly shows a single solo star singer who is getting all of the attention in his music clips. The video contains all different types of shots, such as tracking, close up shots, medium shots and others.

Robbie William's 'Rock DJ' have 2,444,255 views which is satisfying, while having a significant amount of views from all his clips.

                                                Facebook:

Robbie Williams is quit popular of facebook reaching 4,067,013 people following him.

                                                 Twitter:

Here on twitter Robbie Williams is quit popular too, having 2,039, 585 readers and keeping his account about his life up-to-date

Music video Idea N1

                                 Ideas for music video.

Today in the lesson we were brainstorming ideas. Then we decided to split up between the groups and create our own ideas.

John Newman video:
Released - 17 May 2013
Format - Digital download
Genre        Pop, break beat
Length - 3:54
Label - Island
Writer(s) - John Newman, Steve Booker
Producer - Steve Booker, Mike Spencer

The music clip starts off with a relaxed atmosphere and slow motion effect showing people coming up the stairs and entering the hall. The video consists of sharp shot reverse shots and eye line shots, overall some of the shots are quit professional and are not just simplistic. The lighting is natural without any other special effects.

When I watched this music video I liked it straight away. The whole narrative until the end made me to remember myself in similar situations, therefore while watching the video I was having much more emotions. I really like the idea of when a boy sees a girl which he likes, then they have an eye contact smiling at each other, but when the girl isn’t alone and it makes you even more interested to try to get on with her.  The good thing which I like about this music video that there is a narrative where the singer himself is not involved, therefore it is an impression of watching  an intrigue and romantic story with a prominent, distinctive and indispensable singer.
                                                                  Facebook:

                                                              Twitter:

The music video has 25,657,446 views, which is a significant number for an artist to become recognisable worldwide. However on Facebook it got only 84,914 likes, which is understood as the singer is only starting to develop.

                                                        Label:

Another video, which dragged our interest, is the music clip by Neighborhood ' Flawless'

By the group ' The Neighborhood':
Released on: April 22, 2013
Format: Digital downloads
Genre: Rock/Indie; Alternative rock
Length: 4:06
Label: Columbia
Writers: Jesse Rutherford, Zach Abels
Producer: Emile Haynie

The clip starts off with a medium close up of the back of a woman driving her car. The concept of the clip is unique and quit strange since all the four minutes we see one type of shot, the close-up shot of the woman. The video itself is black&white, which transfers the atmosphere of relax and calmness. The clip gently smooth as it goes through and the words match the chosen type of shot

                                                                       Twitter:

The band is considered to be a recent and yet not so famous. It has only 928,072 views on their song 'Flawless', while their hit was the song called ' Sweater Weather', which absolutely blown the audience, reaching 23,006,390 views. On twitter it has 112 readers and 384 likes on Facebook, while the numbers are only increasing
